TELLURIDE SKI RESORT ANNOUNCES MORE NEW TERRAIN...AND MORE SNOW!

During a time in which cut-backs have unfortunately been commonplace in many industries, Telluride Ski Resort will be opening more expert terrain...for an unparalleled third year in a row. This winter's new terrain is located in Prospect Bowl, specifically Gold Hill Chutes 2 through 5. The previous two years' expansions--including hike-to terrain on the Prospect Ridge and the new lift into Revelation Bowl--have already set Telluride apart from other North American resorts as a destination for extreme skiers (in addition to beginners and intermediates, of course). This year's new terrain will be accessible via a hike from the summit of the Revelation lift, and consists of breathtakingly steep, rocky, treeless chutes. With the addition of chutes 2-5, skiers will be able to access practically the entire Gold Hill basin, courage permitting.

Those who are not seeking an extreme experience will soon be delighted as well, as the ski resort has received approval from the US Forest Service to add additional water storage for snowmaking purposes. Although the ski area has the right to use a certain amount of water from the San Miguel River for snowmaking, until recently they have not had permission to store any. Now, however, the ski area will be able to build new underground snowmaking pipelines and improve or replace some of the existing ones. With construction slated to begin in the summer of 2010, the new pipelines and water storage capability will facilitate snowmaking in some areas where it is currently non-existent or insufficient (such as the North, Town of Telluride side of the mountain), and will allow for increased snowmaking in some areas where it already exists (such as Misty Maiden and Polar Queen). If all goes according to schedule, increased snowmaking will make its debut in the '10-'11 ski season. Skiers and boarders rejoice!

The Telluride Ski Resort continues to improve and to dream bigger and better with each passing year. New terrain has made, and continues to make, our mountain more dynamic than ever before, and with increased snowmaking we will have a little bit of extra help if faced with a season of late snowfall or a lackluster month. This is already one of the most beautiful ski resorts in North America, but there's always room for improvement!

36th ANNUAL TELLURIDE FILM FESTIVAL

The box office is open, the rumors are swirling, and anticipation is highÉthe 36th Annual Telluride Film Festival is upon us! As is always the case in the weeks leading up to the Film Festival, locals and visitors alike are speculating as to what films will be featured this year, as the line-up remains a carefully guarded secret until the festival begins. The result is feverish anticipation of the festival's beginning, and an air of excitement as the festival gets underway.

Despite the fact that the exact line-up is still under wraps, 'ACME'-level festival passes have already sold out, and film fans are buzzing with what few details have been released. This year's festival features special Guest Director Alexander Payne, known for his 2005 Academy Award and Golden Globe winning film, Sideways, and more recently, the new HB O series, Hung. As guest Director, Payne has been an integral part of this year's programming, collaboration, and most importantly, film selection.

The 2009 Festival is comprised of over 40 programs to be screened in 9 different venues between Telluride and Mountain Village, with the most popular and highly-anticipated films scheduled to be screened multiple times over the weekend to meet pass holder demand. Pass holders have the benefit of priority seating, which is nearly necessary to secure a seat for the most popular and anticipated films. Weekend passes begin at $340 per person for the 'Cinephile' pass, and go up to $3,900 per person for a 'Patron' pass. With each tier of passes, additional benefits and perks are offered, as one would expect.

However, the Telluride Film Festival is open to allÑeven those who do not hold passes. Free movie screenings are offered in Telluride's Elks' Park each night, and anyone can walk up and purchase a pass to enter any film during the weekend for $20, as long as seating is available.

While the film line-up is not yet public knowledge, tickets are selling rapidly and are expected to sell out by the beginning of the festival. With a history of film premieres including Sling Blade, Rushmore, The Crying Game, Swingers, Lost in Translation, Walk the Line, Brokeback Mountain, Capote, Babel, Last King of Scotland, Crouching Tiger-Hidden Dragon, Juno, Into the Wild, and Slumdog Millionaire, just to name a few, film aficionados aren't in the least bit hesitant to purchase passes even before the program is released. Year after year, the Telluride Film Festival delights its audience, and many have proclaimed that the surprise nature of the festival line-up further adds to the unique persona and energy of this ever more popular event.

Whether you're a die-hard film fan or just happen to be visiting over Labor Day Weekend, you're bound to be swept up in the amazing energy of the weekend's events. Viewing an al fresco free movie in the crisp autumn air in Elk's Park is an experience as unique as Telluride itself, being in the company of fellow cinephiles is intoxicating for those who live for truly great films, and no matter who you are or where you're from there's likely to be a Film Festival event that captures your heart.

BLUES AND BREWS FESTIVAL

Each year as the Box Canyon's Aspen trees take on a golden hue, visitors and locals gather in Town Park to sip micro-brewed beers while enjoying live Blues music, and so it seems that one of the annual rites of passage from summer to autumn in Telluride is the Blues and Brews Festival.

This year, the Festival celebrates its 16th year and will be held from September 18th through 20th. In addition to the celebrated Saturday Grand Tasting' at which 50 microbreweries showcase their hop and barley masterpieces, 19 bands will play on the main stage in Town Park over the 3-day period, with additional shows occurring at aptly named Juke Joints' along Telluride's Main Street. This year's line up features legendary artists Joe Cocker, Taj Mahal, Buddy Guy, and Bonnie Raitt, to name just a few.

There's a reason why the Blues and Brews Festival is one of the locals' favoritesÑthe crisp autumn air, the tasty brews, the magical foliage, and the music of Blues legendsÑall of which combine to make the final festival of the summer a very special event. A NEW AMPITHEATER FOR MOUNTAIN VILLAGE?

Conditional Approval Granted by DRB...Now It's Up to Town CouncilIn just a year or two, we may all be enjoying events, performances, and even the free weekly Sunset Concert Series from the comfort of a new 5,000 person ampitheater in the Mountain Village Core. Earlier this summer, the Telluride Ski and Golf Company requested a special use permit from the Mountain Village Design and Review Board (MVDRB) to construct the new outdoor theater on the Misty Maiden ski run, in between lifts 2 and 4.

The project is slated for TelSki-owned Open Space Lot OS-3, which is essentially located in between Lift 4 and the NASTAR ski race course on the Misty Maiden ski trail. Per the town's Land Use Ordinance, the lot is zoned for recreational purposes and potential construction of recreational facilities, although use as an ampitheater is not specifically addressed in the ordinance. Therefore, the MVDRB had the task of determining whether such an ampitheater met the criteria of Òrecreational useÓ prior to further consideration of the project.

At their July 10th meeting, the MVDRB listened to several hours of public comment and opinion on the proposed ampitheater before voting 3-2 in favor of granting a conditional recommendation for approval of the special use permit that would allow the project to be built. Due to public concern, nine provisions were added to the MVDRB's recommendation for approval, primarily to address noise and traffic issues typically related to an outdoor performing arts venue. Included in the list of conditions for approval are stage lighting mitigation, strict timelines for set-up and take-down of event structures, a viable method to handle increased traffic and parking, and time limits on how late performances may occur into the evening. It is TelSki's hope that negative impacts to the residents of the Village Core area will be minimized or eliminated, although some neighbors do still have concerns.

Provided that the MVDRB's conditions are met, the project will face a second round of the approval process with the Mountain Village Town Council. As with the MVDRB approval, public opinion and comment will be heard prior to the Council's vote on whether to grant the special use permit. With Town Council's approval, however, the project will begin its journey to fruition. Once approved and built, each specific event or concert would also have to apply to the Town for a special event permit prior to the event's occurrence. By requiring a permit for individual events, the Town hopes to retain the ability to assess applicants on a case-by-case basis in order to ensure that each event is a success and not a nuisance to neighbors and homeowners.

More information can be obtained through the Town of Mountain Village's website, www.mountain-village.co.us.
